Life-Saving Care, Thanks to a Watchful Eye and a Powerful Partnership

During a routine visit to HealthNet, one of our dedicated volunteer physicians noticed a small, suspicious spot on a patient’s cheek. Thanks to our free tele-dermatology program, the lesion was evaluated that same day. What followed could only be described as lifesaving.
The spot, initially subtle, had grown rapidly. Within days, the patient was referred to Mercyhealth, where the area was shaved and removed. The diagnosis confirmed the worst: it was the most aggressive form of skin cancer. Without quick detection and treatment, the patient’s life would have been at serious risk.
This outcome wasn’t just a matter of good fortune. It was the result of clinical attentiveness, innovative tools like tele-derm, and, most importantly, the strength of our partnership with Mercyhealth. Their willingness to see HealthNet patients quickly, compassionately, and without red tape makes a critical difference every day.
Because of this partnership, patients who might otherwise delay care—or go without it altogether—are connected to the specialty services they need. All of these patients are uninsured. Without this system in place, a growing number would eventually end up in emergency departments, often when their conditions have become advanced or life-threatening.
By working together, HealthNet and Mercyhealth are keeping patients healthier, improving outcomes, and reducing unnecessary strain on emergency rooms. It’s a partnership that doesn’t just save lives—it also helps preserve the strength and sustainability of our local healthcare system.
This story is just one of many that show how volunteer commitment, smart technology, and trusted partners are helping us deliver care that is timely, equitable, and, in this case, lifesaving.
